RECONSTRUCTION
TO RESUME IN
SABINO
CANYON
From
April 1 through April 14 the road into Upper Sabino
Canyon will be closed at the “Flood Gate” below Bridge
#1, (between Mile Markers #1 and #2). This closure will
apply only to the road surface in the construction area.
Public
access will not otherwise be restricted. All trails
will be open. Link trails from the Phoneline Trail
that access the road in the construction area will remain
open, but will be posted to advise hikers that entry
into the construction zone is prohibited. The shuttle
operated by Sabino Canyon Tours, Inc. will turn around
below Bridge #1. Shuttle traffic to Lower Sabino
will not be affected.
“We
apologize for the inconvenience to our visitors,” said
Sherry Tune, Deputy Santa Catalina District Ranger.
“We're keeping closures to a minimum to provide for
public safety while heavy construction equipment is
active on the roadway.”
Work
on Phase 3, to repair damage from rockslides and flooding
in July 2006, will commence April 15 and continue through
July 15. The road closure in Upper Sabino will continue
to be in effect, but as construction moves farther up
into the canyon, the road will be opened to Tram Stop
#4, (at Mile Marker #2), at which time the shuttle will
travel to that point.
Additional
planned work involves restroom reconstruction in the
Rattlesnake Picnic Area. The work will not require road
closures and will start late summer or fall. For further
information call the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center at
(520) 749-8700.
A message
from Dave Bushell, President of friends of Sabino Canyon
Wow.
In the last few months, Friends of Sabino Canyon has
raised more than $725,000 in the "Save Our Sabino"
campaign. With the help of Jim Click and Mel Zuckerman,
both past Friends of Sabino Canyon board members, we
have raised more in these months than we have in ten
years. I have to thank them for putting forth their
resources, time, and money.
The time I spent with the trail repair crews was exhausting
just to observe, but work continues. The media coverage
has been nothing short of stellar. We introduced Pizza
Hut as our June S.O.S sponsor matching dollar for dollar
up to $40,000.
I have to thank my
board for the unending hours of work. This is a hard
working volunteer group, I'm proud to be associated
with such a crew. But, in the end, it is you that I
have to thank profoundly. We asked and you delivered.
This is nothing new, as I have witnessed in my many
years with Friends. There will be more to ask of you
in the future, and based on your track record, you'll
be there. I thank you.
See
you in the canyon,
Dave
