Bighorn Fire

Due to the lightning-caused Bighorn Fire, which started on June 5, 2020, Sabino Canyon was closed to the public on June 15 until November 1, 2020. That date is subject to change, but right now no one knows when Sabino Canyon will be able to reopen. Monsoon rains could cause considerable damage. For an example of this see recent flooding that occurred in the Canada del Oro wash by viewing the video in this link: https://www.kold.com/2020/07/17/bighorn-fire-debris-begins-flood-into-washes-amid-monsoon-season/

The fire is also still burning underground, creating extremely hazardous hot, hidden cavities that are not visible on the surface and that make the trails dangerous.

Currently the Forest Service is working with the Burn Area Response Team to identify damage from the fire. Friends of Sabino Canyon is in close contact with the Forest Service and will be called upon to help with funding repairs. An example of how we have helped is given by the flooding that occurred in 2006. Thanks to a generous and devoted public we were able to provide the Forest Service with over $350,000. for necessary repairs and rehabilitation to Sabino Canyon.

With your generous donations we will once again assist the Forest Service with necessary repairs so that we can all look forward to the day when we can enjoy Sabino Canyon again.
We will update this page as new information becomes available.

PLEASE CONSIDER CONTRIBUTING TO FRIENDS OF SABINO CANYON AT THIS TIME OF NEED!
