Due to the lightning-caused Bighorn Fire, which started on June 5, 2020, Sabino Canyon was originally closed to the public from June 15 until November 1, 2020. It opened earlier than expected on September 21, 2020.
SCRA is essentially back to the Covid-19 pre-Bighorn Fire status, which is open with limited facilities. The main parking lot, overflow parking lot and fee booth are open. The Sabino and Bear Canyon tram roads are open. Bicycling is allowed as usual on these roads before 9 AM and after 5 PM every day except Wednesday and Saturday.
For hikers, most of the popular trails accessible from the tram roads were not damaged by the fire and are completely open. Beyond 3.3 miles Esperero trail is closed at the burn scar boundary due to hazards that can cause injuries.
Shuttle service, which was suspended in March 2020 due to Covid-19, resumed operation on October 30. Due to Covid-19 there is still no trash pick-up and permanent bathrooms are closed, however porta potties are available. The Visitor Center remains closed however the Sabino Canyon Bookstore has outdoor tables set up where one can purchase items.
